Game Board and Blizzard are two images using my favorite materials: paper and Weimaraner. Both of these things are readily available to me and are easy to work with. A Weimaraner will pretty much hold his position and mine are accustomed to having paper over, under and on top.

In Game Board, my dogs Chip and his son Bobbin were instructed to stand side-by-side on alternating black and white set paper. For Blizzard, Chip had to sit and stay on black set paper while white paper, tossed from above, fluttered down around him. It took several attempts to get the “snow” to fall relatively evenly so there were a number of takes. This piece recalls Dusted, one of my more well-known works, with my first Weimaraner, Man Ray. That image also required several takes. Man Ray had a particularly stoic presence evoking timelessness and serenity and Chip also had some of that in his personality. Game Board also has a precedent in the 20×24 Polaroids I took of Chip and Bobbin evoking Parcheesi and other classic board games.

Even though both Blizzard and Game Board are color photographs they appear to be shot in black and white: black and white paper and gray dogs.

alleverythingthatisyou sno7_057
by Mike + Doug Starn
archival pigment print, edition of 100

“For the Starns, the six-sided nature of snow crystals appears less important than the ways in which the flakes hover between one state and another. As they are being photographed, they are in a process of alteration from solid to liquid, from organized form in space to aqueous blob on a surface, and thus suggest a transitiveness that photography, as a medium devoted to stilling the moment, would seem to contradict. Similarly, as was true of the pictures of leaf veins and tree branches, light seems not so much to shine on the snowflakes as it shines through them. Instead of appearing as specimens, in the manner of 19th-century scientific observation, the snowflakes are objects of transformation.

Few of the Starns’ snowflakes are models of perfection, and in this they remind one of finding starfish and seashells scoured by the tides and left to dry on sandy beaches. Many have parts missing, or they have all their detailed armatures on one side but not the other. Here again, the Starns’ images exceed the aesthetic register of the catalog. Unlike industrial structures, or manmade devices, imperfection is an essential part of their beauty and poignancy.”

Here is material evidence of the Starns’ interest in the phenomenological character of the natural world, cast into being against the certitude of our own impermanence. The photographs speak of the fragile delicacy of our ever-warming world while being themselves a visual bulwark against despair, and they draw us, like moths to light, to the pleasures of sight that but for the camera would exceed the human eye.”

—Excerpt from Andy Grundberg’s introduction in alleverythingthatisyou (catalogue published by the Wetterling Gallery, Stockholm, Sweden 2007)

2011 Lenten Meditations is a collection of daily reflections gathered from
ancient voices in Christian history and modern voices at St. John’s Cathedral.
As we continue exploring how to “let our light shine in the city” and to each
other, we invite you to share this new community practice of prayerfully
meditating on a reflection for each of the 40 days of Lent, plus the Sundays
in Lent. These reflections are based on gospel readings given in Holy Women,
Holy Men: Celebrating the Saints (beginning on Ash Wednesday, 9 March,
through Holy Saturday, 23 April).

The gracious reflectors from St. John’s share honestly from their own, unique
experiences, giving voice to how God, through the words of the Gospel,
continues to challenge and encourage their lives. The additional images
shared each Sunday during Lent are from CB1 Gallery (www.cb1gallery.com),
sales of which will benefit St. John’s outreach ministries. We realize that every
meditation may not resonate with every reader, but we pray that you will
honor and learn from the diversity of ancient and modern voices.

We are called during Lent to walk with Christ, to be honest about our daily
struggles as Christians in this city, and to welcome new ways of letting
Christ’s light shine in and through us. While Lent invites us into this
self-examination, we need not do it alone. We are blessed to be part of a
congregation with a tremendous richness of spiritual and lived experiences
who journey with us. We pray that the vulnerable sharing in this collection,
by the power of God, will help nurture deeper relationships and invite all of
us to reflect on our own lives as we remember the way of Jesus during Lent.

Co-Coordinators,
The Rev. Sarah Lapenta-H
Dr. Robert Brown
